Daum – Nancy

Daum – Nancy is a renowned French glassmaking firm founded in 1878 by Jean Daum in Nancy, France, at the heart of the Art Nouveau movement. After Jean’s death, his sons Auguste and Antonin Daum transformed the studio into one of the most influential decorative glass manufacturers in Europe. The Daum brothers became leading members of the École de Nancy, a collective of artists and designers who revolutionized decorative arts at the turn of the 20th century.

Daum distinguished itself through technical innovation and artistic excellence. The studio mastered multi‑layered cameo glass, acid‑etched and wheel‑carved decoration, enamel painting, and later pioneered the pâte‑de‑verre (glass paste) casting technique. Inspired by nature, Daum’s works often feature flowers, foliage, and atmospheric landscapes executed in glowing, layered colors. These pieces exemplify the fluid, naturalistic forms of Art Nouveau, rivaling and complementing the work of Émile Gallé.

At the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, Daum won the Grand Prix, securing international acclaim. Throughout the Art Deco period and beyond, the firm continued to evolve, producing modern geometric designs while maintaining its commitment to handcrafted glass art.

Today, Daum remains one of the only traditional glass houses still using pâte‑de‑verre, preserving the artistic legacy established over a century ago. Antique Daum – Nancy works from 1890–1914, signed with the famous “Daum Nancy” mark and cross of Lorraine, are highly collectible and revered worldwide for their beauty, technical mastery, and cultural importance in French decorative arts.
